How to Replace the Water Pump on an Evinrude Outboard Motor

Replacing the water pump of the Evinrude outboard motor is a matter of changing out the impeller, O-ring, metal plate and keyway that make up the components of the water pump. The Evinrude outboard motor water pump is very similar to most other outboard motors, with the water pump attached to the top of the gear case, inside the engine housing. You can access the water pump and replace the parts yourself, saving you time and money.

Instructions

    • 1

Unfasten the four nuts underneath the top lip of the Evinrude outboard motor gear case with a socket wrench and slide the gear case off the engine housing. Set the gear case in a vise, sitting upright so you can work on it comfortably and remove the four bolts that secure the water pump housing to the gear case with the socket wrench.

    • 2

Lift the water pump housing off the top of the gear case and turn the housing over to locate the impeller inside the pump housing. Remove the impeller from the pump housing and discard the impeller.

    • 3

Take the O-ring, metal plate and keyway off the top of the gear case and clean any debris from the gear case and motor shaft with a clean cloth. Remove any debris from inside the water pump housing with a clean cloth.

    • 4

Apply a thin layer of marine grease on the top of the gear case where the pump housing sits. Put a thin layer of marine grease along the motor shaft and around the inside edge of the water pump housing as well.

    • 5

Place a new keyway in the slot on the top of the gear case and slide the new metal plate over the motor shaft, sitting it on top of the gear case with the rounded side facing up. Set the new impeller in the water pump housing upside down and place the new O-ring on the inside lip of the housing.

    • 6

Slide the water pump housing down the motor shaft and attach it to the top of the gear case with bolts. Remove the gear case from the vise and slide the case back onto the engine housing. Secure the case to the housing with the nuts.
