How to Replace an F-250 Latch Cable

The latch cable on your Ford F-250 is necessary for lowering and raising your truck's tailgate. Replacing the cable will be necessary if it breaks or malfunctions, as the tailgate will be stuck. To replace the latch cable, you will need to remove the access cover from the inboard side of the tailgate. From there, it's simply a matter of removing a few screws and pulling out the latch cable so you can replace it.

Instructions

      Park the F-250 and, if possible, lower the tailgate. If not, climb into the bed of the truck.

      Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the four screws securing the access cover.

      Remove the two screws mounting the latch to the tailgate. Use a Phillips screwdriver.

      Use a slotted screwdriver to disconnect the control cables from the latch and remove the latch from the tailgate.

      Remove the retaining nuts with a socket wrench and pull the latch cable out of the access cover. Install the replacement cable, making sure to place the cable in the position that the broken cable was in. There are guiding brackets within the tailgate, so installing the cable should not be a problem.

      Reattach the latch and the access cover.
