How to Build a Robot With Legs
Robots have been a part of American culture since their appearance in early science fiction literature. Although the actual robots of today are streamlined and capable of complex procedures (such as assisting in surgeries) the clunky, boxy models of the past retain their nostalgic charm. Because of their simple shape, vintage robot models, complete with movable arms and legs, are relatively easy to build.
Things You'll Need
- Two cardboard boxes (one torso-length, one head-sized)
- Packaging tape
- Super Glue
- Craft glue
- Aluminum foil
- Hobby knife
- Length of flexible heating duct
- Markers
- Silver spray paint
- Old shoes
- Electronic decorations
Instructions

1
Close the top and bottom seals on both cardboard boxes and secure them with packaging tape.
-
2
Spread a layer of Super Glue on the bottom of the head-sized cardboard box. Stand the torso-length box on one of its sides. Place the head-sized box on top of the torso box. This forms your robot's abdomen and head.

3
Cut the length of flexible heating duct to size using a hobby knife. This material will form your robot's arms and legs. As the duct will stretch and expand, an arm length of two feet and a leg length of three feet is recommended. However, you may customize these measurements as desired.
-
4
Squeeze a bead of Super Glue around the edge of each piece of duct. Press both arm pieces in place and hold them securely until the glue bonds. Repeat for the leg pieces.
-
5
Coat all sides of each box in a thin layer of craft glue. Cover the robot's body and head with as much aluminum foil as you desire. The more you add, the more metallic your robot will look.
-
6
Poke holes around the bottom of the leg ducts with a hobby knife. Thread the laces of old shoes through the holes and tie a secure knot. Spray paint the shoes silver if desired.
-
7
Decorate the robot as desired. Apply touches of silver paint, glue on old electronic accessories (keyboards, dials, screens, wires) or draw a funny face on the robot's head.

Tips & Warnings
Make a movable head by attaching the head-sized cardboard box to the torso with a small length of heating duct. Attach with Super Glue as described in Step 4.
If working with children, do not allow them to use the hobby knife.
Super Glue bonds extremely well with skin, use caution.
