Familiarize yourself with the car. The controls and feel of many cars differ. For example, a light-weight vehicle will be easier to control than a heavy SUV.

Prepare. Take the methods necessary to prepare yourself while driving. Adjust your mirror and your seat belt to your preference. These precautions, while not only valuable, will help you take better control of the vehicle.

    • 4

Find a large area clear of obstacles. When learning to drive, it is imperative to be calm and relaxed. A wide open area with a clear view will help you take better control while also keeping you safe from any possible accidents.

Begin on a level surface. Driving on a level surface will help to balance the car when in drive and keep it from rolling back and forth while using the clutch.

    • 6

Familiarize yourself with the gear shifter. Read the car's manual or guide to controlling the gear shifter in the center console, and become familiar with what each gear does.

    • 7

Align your feet to the proper controls. Position your feet so that the left aligns to the clutch control. To select a gear, first depress the clutch pedal down completely to the floor and use your hand to position the gear shifter.

    • 8

Position the shifter into first gear. With the clutch depressed, select the first gear. This gear allows the car to gain a low level of speed.

    • 9

Gently release the clutch. Using your right foot at the same time as the clutch is released, gently depress the gas pedal to accelerate the car forward. Once the clutch is fully released, use your right foot to further depress the gas pedal to gain speed. Precision timing in releasing the clutch and depressing the gas pedal at the same moment is imperative for a smooth ride.

    • 10

Use proper judgment. When you feel it is time to shift into another gear, depress the clutch to the floor and release the gas pedal in unison. Using your hand, position the shifter into your next gear.
