How to Weld Small Metal Parts

How to Weld Small Metal Parts thumbnail
Welding small parts requires an extra degree of precision.

Welding small metals parts can be tricky if not done correctly. When welding, both metal materials are heated and enter a molten stage that makes it easier to quickly join them together permanently because of the metal's ability to solidify within a short time. Because of the small nature of metal parts, it is advisable to use the Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) process for welding. It allows for more precision and accuracy.

Things You'll Need

  • Metal parts
  • Torch
  • Arc starter
  • Tungsten welding electrode

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on the welding power supply.

    • 2

Assemble the metal parts you wish to weld on the working table and start the arc.

    • 3

Direct and point the electrode arc using the torch towards the base of the metal parts to be joined.

    • 4

Increase the intensity of the arc slowly to melt the metals. Use a filler rod if possible to feed into the molten puddle by hand-filling the puddle to create a stronger metal bond in the joining process.

    • 5

Switch off the welding power supply once you're finished using the arc. Leave the welded metal part to completely cool.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you have a thorough knowledge about welding before starting the steps.

  • Because of the high temperatures and electrical currents involved, make sure to wear a welding mask, gloves, coveralls and an apron before beginning the process.
