How do I Repair X10 Modules?
X10 is an international industry standard for wireless control of devices that you use at your home or office. The X10 modules switch the power using a solid state switch called "TRIAC." These modules allow you to dim or brighten a lamp load. These modules tend to die early. Typically, the problem is often traced back to a bad TRIAC. The best and only way to fix a X10 module is by replacing the triac with a new one. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Purchase a TRIAC replacement from the lamp manufacturer's website. You can also try an electronics/hardware store to purchase a replacement. One of the most universal triacs is available from Radio Shack (Part number: 276-1000). The cost is around $6.
-
2
Unplug the device that needs a X10 module replacement.
-
-
3
Use a screwdriver to open up the device. Note that this process will depend solely on the device that uses the X10 module.
-
4
Locate the triac on the circuit board. It is long and black in color. You can identify it by its part number. Use your device manual to double-check.
-
5
Remove by gently pulling the triac from the circuit board. Prior experience with circuit board operations is needed for this step. Consult a professional electrician if you are not sure how to perform this step.
-
6
Place the newly purchased triac on the exact same location on the circuit board. Make sure the pins at the bottom of the circuit board aligns with the ones on the triac. Once again, prior experience is required for this step.
-
7
Put the circuit board back in its original place.
-
8
Use a screwdriver to tighten all the screws and close the device.
-
9
Plug the device back to its power source. Turn on the power switch.
