How to Hang a Wall Quilt
Small decorative quilts are most often made to display on the wall as art. A wall quilt is made the same way as a large bed quilt, with the addition of a mechanism for hanging. Rings sewn on the back corners are sufficient for hanging a wall quilt with a width smaller than 18 inches, but wider quilts require more stability to prevent the fabric from sagging and pulling. Attach a fabric sleeve to the back of the quilt to insert a hidden extension rod, which you can place in cup hooks on the wall. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Measure the width of your wall quilt. Cut a piece of fabric 4 inches wide by the width measurement of the quilt from a scrap of your backing fabric or muslin.
-
2
Lay the fabric on your ironing surface with the wrong side facing up. Fold over 1/4 inch of a short end to the wrong side of the fabric and press. Fold over another 1/4 inch, press and pin. Machine sew along the pinned edge to hem. Repeat on the other short end of the fabric.

3
Fold the fabric in half with the right sides together and the long edges matching. Pin the long edges together. Sew the pinned edge using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. This forms the fabric into a tube. Turn the tube right side out. Press the tube flat with the sewn seam along one long edge. This creates the hanging sleeve.

Lay the quilt on your work surface with the back side facing up. Place the length of the sleeve across the width of the quilt. Position the sleeve 1 inch below the top edge of the quilt and center the ends between the side edges. Pin the long edges of the sleeve to the quilt.
-
5
Hand-sew the long edges of the sleeve to the quilt's back. Do not sew across the short edges of the sleeve and do not sew through the thickness of the quilt to the front.
-
6
Adjust an extension rod to the width of your quilt. Insert the rod through the sleeve. A 1/2 inch of the rod will extend past each end of the sleeve. Hang the ends of your rod from hooks on the wall.
