How to Remove Chalky Marks from Oneida Silverware

A little polish can make your silverware shine.

Chalky marks on silverware are typically created by either hard water or from foods with high salt content. Oneida's stainless steel can be placed into the dishwasher. This will remove the white chalky marks that exist. Sterling silver, silverplate and gold flatware are not recommended for dishwasher use. If you decide to place these items in the dishwasher, never mix the metals together. Keeping Oneida's flatware stored in a tarnish-resistant cloth helps to keep them looking like new.

Things You'll Need

• High-quality polish
• Soft cloths

Instructions

1. Place a dab of high-quality polish onto a soft cloth.

2. Rub the polish onto the silverware in an up-and-down motion. Do not do it a circular motion. If there are scrapes in the silverware, a circular motion can damage the silverware. If a scratch is visible, polish in the direction of the scratch just for that area.

3. Use different parts of the cloth. Once the initial polish is applied, buff the utensil with a soft cloth. While buffing the utensil, the polish will come off into the cloth. Move the cloth consistently, so you don't keep reapplying the polish to the utensil.

4. Move to the next utensil. Perform the same procedure.

5. Rinse off the silverware with warm water.

6. Take another cloth and dry the silverware. Again, buff the silverware to bring out the shine.

Tips & Warnings

• Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions. Oneida has many different types of plating they use on their silverware.

• If you decide to use the dishwasher, be careful of the type of detergent you use. Detergents with bleach can erode the protection coating from the silverware.
