How to Wallpaper Over Mobile Home Paneling

If you live in a mobile home and want to make some home improvements, you can change the walls. Since mobile home paneling has grooves in it, wallpaper application can be a bit more difficult than in a traditional home. Instead of simply hanging wallpaper directly on the paneling, you have to make the uneven surface even. It'll take around two days before you can begin hanging the wallpaper. Instructions

Remove all outlet covers, switch covers and molding from the walls. Clean the walls with a mixture of warm water and ammonia, using equal parts of each. This preps the walls for the paste. Let the walls dry for three to five hours. Open windows for ventilation.

Use a roller to put acrylic wallpaper primer on the panels. Let it dry overnight. Then hang the first stripe of liner paper to the paneling to cover the uneven surface of the wall. Liner paper has a stiff texture and is applied horizontally instead of vertically. Use paste and a pasting brush to get it to stick to the walls. Put the paste directly on the paper and then put the paper on the wall, starting in the corner. Drying times vary by brand, so check the label to know how long you must let the paper dry; it's usually at least 24 hours.

Hang the paper over any windows, outlets or doors and then use scissors to cut away most of the excess paper. Press the liner paper flat against the walls and use a utility knife to trim away around the edges of the windows, outlets and doors.

Smooth out any bubbles in the liner by moving a smoothing brush horizontally across the wall toward a corner. Once this is done, you can apply your next piece of liner paper on the bottom, repeating the same process, before finishing with the middle strip of paper. With the middle strip, you must overlap two inches on top of the top strip and cut through both layers with the utility knife to perform a butt seam.

Leave the liner to dry for 36 hours once you have installed all of the liner paper. Once dry, you can prime the liner paper layer and hang your pre-pasted wallpaper over the liner paper in vertical strips. It should stick to the liner paper with no problems.
