How to Word a High School Diploma
All high school diplomas have some items in common, and some are unique to the institution issuing them. Common items include the name of the school, the name of the student and the date the diploma was issued. Items that vary include who signs the diploma -- sometimes it's the principal, sometimes the superintendent of schools, sometimes both, or some other authority. Different majors may be recognized on diplomas, such as "general academic" diplomas for majors in math or science, for example, or "vocational" diplomas for majors in auto mechanics or woodworking. Diplomas also bear the official seal of the institution that grants them.

Recognize the unique achievements of home-schooled students by issuing them a home school diploma. This may be designed by the parents and may recognize the student's major course of study. Title the home school diploma, "Diploma" or "Home School" or some other phrase that's appealing. There are no rules about what your home school diploma should say. Be sure to include the student's name and the date the diploma was issued.

Visit sites that offer a variety of templates with different wording for a diploma. If you have the graphic skills, you may want to print your own diploma, using your own wording or a version of one of the samples available at, for example, "http://www.freeprintable.com." Besides recognizing the accomplishments of a home-schooled student, you might want to design a high school diploma as a stage prop for a play, for example, or for a scrapbook page. Agencies that prepare students for a GED exam and diploma may want to honor students with an agency diploma or certificate of recognition.

Before you home-school a high school-aged student, check with your local school district to find out the local high school diploma requirements. The Charlotte Mecklenburg School District in Charlotte, N.C., for example, requires students to attend a public high school successfully in order to earn a public high school diploma, according to Sheryl Robison of the district's curriculum department. In her district there is no other way to qualify for a local high school diploma, she says. Each district and each state has its own rules. A home-schooled student may not be eligible for any other diploma.

Tips & Warnings
Do not make a diploma and try to pass it off as one you earned. Employers and institutions of higher education are known to fire or expel anyone they find submitting a fake diploma for their consideration.
