How do I Design House Locks?

House locks have the ability to add character and a definitive personal touch to a home. They prove that even the smallest detail goes a long way in making a house a home. Designing a lock has everything to do with personal taste, style and a sense of fun. Make sure that the lock design blends well with the style and character of your home and before you know it you will have a very personal addition to your home.

Instructions

1. Survey the style of your home. Is it modern or country? Or is it glamorous or artistic? You want to make sure that the lock design will blend in with the rest of your home.

2. Sketch an idea of what you would like your lock to look like. If your home is on the modern side then you may want to stick to cool colors and simple circle or square designs. However, if your home is more glamorous, Victorian or Gothic style locks may be helpful in inspiring your own design process. Victorian style is full of detail such as paisley, flowers and birds while Gothic is more dark and uses triangular shapes for much of its design.

3. Choose your materials. You want to make sure that the metal not only complements the style, but works with the colors you already have in your home. If your home is full of warm colors such as reds and oranges a warm metal color like dark gold is preferable. If you have decorated your home with cold colors such as blues and greens, a silver metal will work best.

4. Bring your sketch and color list to a locksmith or home design store. They will be able to bring the lock to life for you. Not all locksmiths will provide this service so call your local shop to find out if they do. If not, many renovation companies and home decorating stores will provide the service for you.
