How to Replace a Dash Stereo Amplifier

How to Replace a Dash Stereo Amplifier thumbnail
Changing out your car amplifier is far less involved than changing a stereo system.

Most standard car stereo systems come with a stereo built directly into the dash, and that's it. High-end sound systems have an additional amplifier, which is used to produce higher levels of audio. This amplifier is connected to your dash stereo and is generally located either under the drivers seat or in the trunk. If your current stereo amplifier is damaged or needs replacing, you can remove the current device and insert a new stereo amplifier.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate your dash stereo's amplifier. If the amplifier came factory installed, it is going to state this information in the User's Manual. If not, check below the front seats and in the trunk. When checking the trunk, you need to look under the carpet panels.

Disconnect all the cables running into the amplifier. This includes the power connection, stereo hook up and all wires running into the amp from the speakers.

    • 3

Set the replacement amp down in the original's location, then connect the power cable into the new amplifier. Once you have power (do not turn the car on), connect the stereo wires into the stereo port on the amp, followed by the speaker wires running into the amplifier.

    • 4

Power on the amp (there should be a small power switch on the device) and turn on the vehicle.
