How to Raise Money for the Wonder of Reading Program

Wonder of Reading donates $10,000 worth of books to renovated school libraries.

The Wonder of Reading program is a library based service that involves volunteers working one-on-one with students to improve their literacy skills. Starting with a grant from the Everychild Foundation, the Wonder of Reading has gone on to become the largest literacy organization for children in Los Angeles. To apply to become a partner with the Wonder of Reading program, a school has to indicate its commitment to literacy by establishing an active Library Leadership Team, having a base of volunteers and providing at least 1,500 square feet of space that can be renovated for a library. Further, the school is responsible for raising a portion of the funds to carry out the required renovation work. Raising money to become involved in the program can be done in a number of ways.

Instructions

1. Make parents, teachers and the community aware of the amount of money needed to participate in the Wonder of Reading program. Let them know that all donations -- no matter how small -- are gratefully appreciated.

2. Ask the local newspaper and radio station to cover the event and let people know where they can donate money.

3. 

   Auctions help raise money for the Wonder of Reading program.

   Organize an auction. Ask parents, students, teachers and community members to clean out their garages and basements and donate items to be sold. Ask for a volunteer auctioneer to help save on costs.

4. Involve students in raising money. Promote ownership of the program by having students set up a concession stand to sell fruit and healthy snacks during recess and lunch hour.

5. Approach local businesses about making a donation. Point out how much the program will help students and appeal to their community spirit to become involved.

6. 

   Place donation buckets with a "Please donate to the Wonder of Reading program" close to the check out area in local stores. It is an ideal location as people are more inclined to donate money when they already have their wallets out.

7. Write to corporations and ask for financial assistance. Include a brochure about the Wonder of Reading program to help explain why it is a cause worthy of consideration. Stress that literacy is everyone's concern and responsibility.
