A garage door opener makes it easy to get in and out of your garage without getting out of your car. This can save you time and effort. You should consider two aspects when wiring a garage door opener. Most garage door openers simply plug into an outlet. However, if you have the appropriate electrical work in the ceiling, you can wire the door opener permanently in just a few minutes. Instructions

  1. Installing the Control Button

    • 1

      Turn off the power to your garage by flipping the circuit breaker.

      Decide on a place for the control button that is close to the door that leads to the garage.

    • 3

      Remove 1/2 inch of the plastic sheathing from the end of control button wires with wire strippers.

    • 4

      Match the wires to the screw terminals on the control button. Wrap the white wire around the number two terminal and the white/red wire around the number one terminal.

      Remove the cover from the control button. Pry the cover out of place with a small flat-head screwdriver.

      Hold the control button in place on the wall. Mark the screw holes in the button with a pencil. Remove the button.

      Drill the screw holes in the drywall with a drill. Tap drywall anchors into the holes with a hammer.

      Screw the control button into place with a screwdriver and the included screws.

      Run the control button wire up the wall and across the ceiling to the motor unit of the garage door opener. Tack the wire into place with a staple gun. Work carefully so you do not pierce the wire with the staples.

      Decide whether you are going to plug the garage door opener into an outlet or wire it permanently. Check with you local building code to see what is required for the installation. Plug the door opener into an outlet if permanent wiring isn't required.

    Wiring the Motor Unit

      Remove the cover from the motor unit with a screwdriver. Place the screws somewhere safe and set the cover aside.

      Disconnect the three-pronged cord from the motor unit.

    • 13

      Wrap the black wire around the screw in the brass terminal of the ceiling electrical work. Similarly, wrap the white wire around the screw in the silver terminal, and wrap the ground wire around the green ground screw.

      Place the cover back onto the motor unit. Screw the cover into place with a screwdriver and screws.
