How to Build a Decorative Stone Column
An attractive decorative stone column can add interest and height to the landscape or garden. The stone column could also be used as a base for a wooden porch support or as a pedestal for a birdhouse or ceramic birdbath. By using a framework of cement blocks, the sturdy column can be built to a variety of sizes and heights. A collection of beautiful flat stones found on beaches and riverbanks can be displayed on this stone column. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- 20 8-inch by 8-inch by 16-inch concrete blocks
- Quickset cement
- Wheelbarrow
- Trowel
- Flat stones the size of a teacup saucer or smaller
- 12-inch granite square

Arrange four concrete blocks into a square formation in the site desired for the stone column.

Mix the cement with water in the wheelbarrow until the cement is the consistency of oatmeal. Use the trowel to add a 1-inch layer of cement to the tops of the concrete blocks.
Add another layer of four cement blocks facing in the opposite direction as the first layer.

Continue adding layers of concrete blocks until the structure is approximately 40 inches tall.

Cover one side of the structure with the damp cement at a thickness of 2-inches. Push the flat sides of the stones and rocks into the wet cement in a decorative pattern. Repeat on all sides of the decorative column.

Place the granite square on top of the decorative column, centered.
