How to Get a Marriage License in Pennsylvania

Follow these steps to obtain a marriage license in the Keystone State.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    Make sure you're both at least 18 years of age. (If you're younger, you'll need parental consent.)

  2. Step 2

    Note that blood tests are no longer required in this state.

  3. Step 3

    Apply in person with your intended spouse at the county clerk's office, which is located in the county courthouse.

  4. Step 4

    Bring a photo identification with you. Some counties require this before issuing a license.

  5. Step 5

    Be prepared to wait three days after you apply for the license before it can be granted.

  6. Step 6

    Expect to pay in cash. The price varies from county to county but is usually in the $25 to $50 range.

  7. Step 7

    Bring any divorce or death certificates with you if either of you has been married before.

  8. Step 8

    Remember that the license is valid for 60 days.

on 11/22/2005 For an extra $25, Pennsylvania will waive the 3-day waiting period. This is especially helpful for out-of-state couples who will not be in town together until a few days before the wedding.
