How to Increase Your Vocabulary by Writing Words and Definitions on Note Cards for Tests
Often possessing a complex understanding of vocabulary can be the difference between doing well or poorly on a test. Even if the purpose of a test is not specifically to measure vocabulary, nearly all assessments measure vocabulary understanding, at least to some degree. To ensure that your failure to understand vocabulary terms doesn't garner you a lower grade than you deserve, use note cards as a tool to build your vocabulary understanding.

1
List the vocabulary words that will likely appear on the test. If the teacher has provided you with a list, use this tool. If not, create your own list my moving through the chapter and placing any key terms, which are often in bold, on your vocabulary study list.
-
2
Place the definition of the term next to the word on your list. Look up the words in the glossary of your book if possible, as this will provide you with the definition of the word that most closely relates to the subject in question. If the word in question does not appear in the glossary, use a dictionary to find the meaning.

3
Write each term on the front of a note card. If one side of your note card has lines and the other doesn't, use the unlined side as the front of the card, writing your term in the center.
-
4
Write the definition on the reverse of the note cards. Using the lined side, if one exists, carefully copy the definition from your list, ensuring that you don't mix up any terms.
-
5
Quiz yourself using the note cards. Move through your stack of note cards, looking at each term and orally saying what you think the definition is. Check your answer. If you were right, place the card in one pile, if you were incorrect, place the card in another. Return to the pile containing the cards you didn't know, reviewing these until you memorize them.
-
6
Retain note cards from previous units, returning to them throughout the course to ensure that you don't lose the new vocabulary. Even if you don't have a cumulative exam for the course in question, you will likely need the vocabulary you learned early on for success later in the course. After each test, place the note cards you created for that unit in a shoe box or other storage receptacle. Return to them periodically to refresh your memory.
