How to Adjust a Tecumseh 5.5 HP Motor Carburetor

The Tecumseh 5.5 HP motor is a small engine that is used on lawn mowers, snow blowers and many other household garden tools. The motor has a hex-shaped adjustment screw, below the float bowl on the carburetor, to adjust the carburetor setting for maximun efficiency. Adjust the Tecumseh carburetor with a screwdriver in just a few minutes, saving you time and money.

  1. Identify the hex-shaped adjustment screw beneath the float bowl on the Tecumseh 5.5 HP motor and turn the hex screw clockwise with a screwdriver until it is completely closed. Do not overtighten the screw.

  2. Turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise one and one half turns and start up the Tecumseh engine, letting it warm up for a few minutes.

  3. Move the throttle so the engine is running at full power and turn the adjustment screw clockwise until you feel the engine start to stall. Turn the adjustment screw back, counterclockwise until you hear the engine smooth out.

  4. Turn the adjustment screw counterclockwise until you hear the engine begin to stall again and turn the screw clockwise until you hear it smooth out one more time.
