How to Apply New Asphalt Shingles Over Old Asphalt Shingles on Homes
When correctly installed, asphalt shingles lie flat against a roof's surface. This makes it possible to lay new shingles directly over the old asphalt shingles. By applying new asphalt shingles over the old shingles, you can save time on the installation process, as well as the money it would cost to install roofing felt. Since the roofing felt is already in place beneath the old shingles, you need only to apply the new shingles to the roof. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Lay the first shingle on the left side of the roof at the bottom edge. Line the shingle up with the first shingle of the first row of the original shingles, but let the new shingle overhand the edge and side by 1/2 inch. Put four to six nails through the top half of the shingle to secure the shingle into place, using a nail gun.
-
2
Place the second shingle next to the first so they touch on the edges and the tops of the shingles make a horizontal line, and secure the shingle with four to six nails. If the final shingle hangs off the edge of the roof by more than 1/2 inch, allow the shingle to hang, but place the nails where they will go through the roof.

3
Trim the first shingle for the next row down by a few inches and place it so that it overlaps the first row of shingles by 10 inches or so and hangs off the edge by 1/2 inch like the first row. Secure the shingles with nails, and then lay the next shingles in the row next to the first, so that the seams in the second row of shingles are staggered with the seams in the first row.
-
4
Cut down the third row's first shingle down by a few inches more than the first shingle in the second row, using a utility knife, so the seams stagger. Lay the row as you laid the first two. Continue up the roof until you reach 1 to 2 inches from the peak.
-
5
Switch to the other side of the roof. Begin at the bottom left edge of the roof and work upward as you did on the first side of the roof until you reach 1 to 2 inches from the peak.
-
6
Center shingles over the peak of the roof and bend them so that half the shingle is on each side of the roof. Spread roofing cement under the edges of the shingles with a putty knife and put at least two nails on each side of the peak shingles to hold them in place. Once the peak shingles have been laid, cover all the nails used to install them with roofing cement for a watertight seal.
