How to Seal a Stone Countertop

How to Seal a Stone Countertop thumbnail
Seal kitchen countertops to avoid staining.

Countertops made from stone, like granite or slate, need to be sealed approximately every two years to ensure they are impervious to permanent stains. Natural stone is porous, literally cut from the earth, and leaving stone countertops unsealed can lead to stains that are difficult to remove. When water does not stay puddled on a countertop, it is generally time to reseal existing counters. For rooms with newly installed stone countertops, ask the installer if they have been sealed. Test the countertop to see if it needs sealing. In an inconspicuous area, pour 1/2 cup of water onto your granite or other natural stone countertop and check back in 30 minutes to see if the water has absorbed into the stone. If the water has absorbed, it is time to seal.

Purchase a sealer labeled as "impregnator" sealer, which typically lasts longer than a topical sealer. Read the warranty and look for impregnator sealers guaranteed to last up to 10 years.

    • 3

Remove any appliances or other items from the countertops. Clean with a damp sponge and let the counters dry.

Wait two hours for the sealer to dry, then reapply a second coat in the same manner.
