How to Clean Deck Material

How to Clean Deck Material thumbnail
Clean your deck composite to keep it looking like new.

Synthetic deck material needs to be cleaned like any other surface outside your home. Regular wear and tear of continual use and weathering the elements can create a build up of dirt and grime on the deck that should be washed on a regular basis to keep your deck looking fresh and clean. Because synthetic deck material is made by combining wood with plastic, you do not want to use a wood cleaner on the deck material. You will instead want to create your own. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Sweep the deck clear of any debris and plant matter with the broom.

    • 2

Wash the deck using the pressure washer set to the lowest setting. This should dislodge some of the more resistant debris.

    • 3

Measure out 1/2 cup of mild detergent into the bucket.

    • 4

Fill the bucket three-quarters of the way with water.

    • 5

Stir the mixture in the bucket with your hand and the scrub brush, to ensure that the detergent and water are completely mixed.

    • 6

Scrub the deck with the scrub brush, dipping it into the cleaning solution as needed.

    • 7

Rinse the deck with clean water from the hose to remove soap along with any debris the scrub brush dislodged.

    • 8

      Allow the deck to air-dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Exercise caution while using the pressure washer, as a too-high setting can damage the deck material and cause injury to the operator.
