1
Purchase a hair color corrector from a drug, beauty or retail store, along with a pair of latex gloves, shower cap and hair color brush. Make sure the kit contains a color reducer, conditioner and processing lotion.
-
2
Mix the color reducer and conditioner in a small plastic bowl or provided applicator bottle. Mix according to package instructions, which is usually equal parts of the color reducer and conditioner.

3
Apply to the hair. If you are using a bowl, scoop out the color remover with the hair color brush and brush onto hair, concentrating on roots and working down to the hair tips. With an applicator bottle, squeeze the corrector out near the roots and work down to the hair tips. Gently massage the color corrector into hair, as you would with shampoo.
-
4
Cover the entire head with the shower cap and allow to sit for allotted time--usually 20 minutes. Check hair frequently and do a strand test to see if color is removed. For a strand test, take a small section of hair and wipe off the color corrector near the middle of the strands to see what color the strand is after color removal. Keep checking throughout the 20 minutes, since some hair is more porous than others and will release color quicker.

5
Apply the processing lotion to the hair once it has reached your desired color. Allow it to sit on the hair for five minutes.
-
6
Rinse your hair in the shower, using warm water. Dry hair thoroughly, alternating between a warm and cool setting. Once hair is completely dry, continue with your new hair color application.
