How to Make a Deck Gate Using Lattice
Building a lattice gate for a deck is a relatively simple project. Using lattice allows for light and visibility that would be blocked by a solid gate. Building your own gate allows you to customize the style and color of the lattice, hinges, latch and other elements to fit the decor of your yard and deck. When the project is finished you can paint or stain the gate to match your existing decor. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need

- Wooden lattice
- Four 2-inch by 4-inch boards
- Box of 3-inch wood screws
- Drill or power screwdriver

1
Measure the opening for the gate. Subtract an inch from either side to allow room for the gate to swing. The height of the gate is up to your personal preference, but subtract an inch for the bottom clearance. If there is an obstruction above the gate, subtract an inch from the top as well.
-
2
Create the vertical sides. Cut two boards to the height measurement from the first step. These two boards will be the sides of the gate.

3
Cut the crosspieces. Cut the other two boards to the width measurement from the first step, minus 4 inches. This allows for the thickness of the two vertical boards when assembled.
-
4
Lay the vertical boards on the ground. Place the two horizontal boards between them at the very top and bottom to form a square or rectangular frame. Use a power screwdriver to drive two screws through the side of the vertical board and into the end of the horizontal board, holding it firmly together. Repeat for each of the four joints.

5
Measure the total height and width of the frame. Cut the lattice to fit these measurements and place the lattice on the frame. Use finishing nails to nail the lattice to the frame, using one nail every 6 inches.
-
6
Paint or stain the gate. Choose a paint or stain that will protect the wood from weather. Allow plenty of drying time before proceeding.
-
7
Affix the hinges. Place the gate in the opening to determine the best spot for the hinges, depending on which way the gate must swing. Use the screws that came with the hinges to attach them to the gate about 6 inches from the top and bottom of the frame. Have a friend hold the gate in place while you attach the other side of the hinge to the opening.
