How to Build Stockades & Pillars
A stockade fence is a solid fence that is made out of vertically placed boards, according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary online. The term "stockade fence" has been used since 1985 to refer to what most people consider as a privacy fence. The boards can be flat at the top or they can have pointed ends, especially if the fence is designed with the intent of keeping animals in and people out. It is possible to build a stockade fence using pillars, or support posts, in addition to horizontal support boards. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Call the county property assessment department in your town and obtain a document that clearly illustrates your property lines. The website Online Tips explains that the stockade fence must not cross over any of the property lines. Call your local building inspector to determine what the height limit is for fencing. Most municipal building codes do not permit fences higher than six feet.

2
Discuss the fence building project with any neighbors who have adjacent properties. You cannot join on to a neighbor's fence without written permission. If no fences are built at the time you begin your project, your neighbors cannot connect fencing to your fence at a later date without your written permission.

3
Mark all of the property lines with spray paint. Dig fence post holes at even intervals around the property line. The distance will vary according to your needs and the size of your property, but according to the Sentry Fence website, the distance between each post should not be longer than the length of the horizontal support boards. Apply waterproofing paint to the bottom third of each of the wooden pillars, or support posts.

4
Pour concrete into the holes and place each support pillar and corner pillar into the designated holes. Allow the concrete to dry completely. Screw the horizontal support boards into place. Sentry Fence explains that each section of the fence will have three support boards: one each at the top, middle and bottom of the pillars.

5
Place a vertical fence panel where you want it, then screw it into place onto each horizontal support board. Repeat this process for each panel. A standard fence panel is eight inches wide. The panels must be flush in order to create a solid stockade fence that provides adequate privacy.

6
Paint all of the support pillars and the panels with waterproof wood stain in order to protect the integrity of the stockade fence once it is completed.

Tips & Warnings
When measuring the perimeter of the property and marking the location of each of the pillars, or posts, it is important to determine and mark the location of any gates that will be installed. It is possible for a backyard or property to have more than one gate.
