Trouble With the MAP Sensor on a Durango

Test MAP sensor voltage using a digital multimeter.

Trouble with a manifold absolute pressure sensor, or MAP sensor, on a Dodge Durango causes fuel regulation problems in the engine. This may appears as loss of power while driving or a hesitant engine. The MAP sensor, found in the main air hose leading to the engine, relays information concerning air pressure to the Durango's onboard computer. The computer uses the pressure information to determine how much fuel to inject with the air into the engine. This amount of fuel varies with automobile speed. A faulty MAP sensor will have an incorrect voltage reading.

• Digital multimeter

Instructions

1. Insert the ignition key into the Durango and turn it until it's in the position to enable electrical systems, but don't start the engine.

2. Turn on the digital multimeter then change the measurement dial to the DC volt position. The DC volt position is marked by a capital letter "V" with straight over it.

3. Touch the negative (black) lead of the multimeter to the negative terminal of the MAP senor. Touch the positive (red) lead of the multimeter to the positive terminal of the MAP senor. The reading that appears on the multimeter screen represents the voltage of the MAP sensor. If the voltage is not between 4.0 and 5.0 volts the sensor requires replacement.
