How to Add a Chain-link Gate
To provide access to an area protected by a chain-link fence, install a gate. Chain-link gates typically consist of a rectangular pipe frame with a section of chain link fabric stretched across the center. The gate attaches to the fence with two special hinges. One half of each hinge attaches to a terminal post on one side of the gate. The other half attaches to the gate itself. When joined, the hinges allow the gate to swing freely. A gate fork latch, mounted on the terminal post on the other side, allows the gate to be fastened. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Set the two terminal posts that serve as the gate posts on either side of the gate at a distance that allows for the gate itself, the hinges and the gate fork latch.
-
2
Place a gate post hinge on one of the gate posts just below the top tension band with the hinge pin pointing outward and downward to prevent the gate from being easily removed. Insert the bolt through the holes in the gate post hinge. Thread on the nut and tighten the nut and bolt securely.

3
Place another gate post hinge on the same gate post just above the bottom tension band with the hinge pin pointing outward and upward. Secure this hinge with another nut and bolt.
-
4
Place a gate frame hinge on the chain link gate, just above the bottom tension band on one side of the gate. Secure the gate frame hinge to the gate frame with a nut and bolt, tightly.
-
5
Place a gate frame hinge on the chain link gate, just below the top tension band on the same side of the gate. Secure the gate frame hinge to the gate frame with a nut and bolt, loosely.
-
6
Set the bottom gate frame hinge onto the pin on the bottom gate post hinge. Slide the top gate frame hinge down enough to align it with the downward facing pin on the top gate post hinge. Slide the gate frame hinge up onto the pin. Tighten the nut and bolt to secure the hinge.
-
7
Attach the gate fork latch to the gate post on the opposite side of the gate at a convenient height on the post. Secure the latch to the post with a nut and bolt. Close the gate and drop the fork latch onto the gate frame to verify the latch is properly aligned.
