A shower curtain is easy to install after a shower door is removed.

Some people like shower doors and some prefer shower curtains. Often, a shower door deteriorates over time, and the finish may peel or rot or simply become outdated. When it is time to remove the shower doors and frames, it may be a good time to try out a new look, like a spa style shower curtain. With both shower curtains and separate liners, new styles are always coming into fashion. One look has textural fabric curtains with a sheer liner. Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew any parts of the shower door and frame that have exposed and accessible screws. Typically, you can remove the top bar and shower doors, leaving the sides and bottom. These are sometimes attached with screws mixed with caulk. Look for two screws on each rail if the installation used screws. The screws are likely to leave holes in the underlying wall surface if they are present. The caulk will be hard and very tough to remove.

    • 2

Cut and remove all visible caulk with a sharp utility knife. Tape along both sides of the shower frame 3 to 4 inches in both directions. This helps to protect the wall and floor surfaces as you work on removing the frames.

    • 3

Point a heat gun along the edge of the frame. Pry under the edge of the frame with a 4-inch putty knife. The heat helps to soften the hard caulk. Scrape with a one-sided razor blade if necessary. Remove all of the remaining frame. Repair screw holes with a plastic insert screw cap and adhesive. Clean the walls and floor of your shower and bath area using a caulk adhesive solvent.

    • 4

Measure the width of your shower and tub enclosure and select a shower curtain rod that suits your design aesthetic. Often you can use a tension rod that will not mar the walls.

    • 5

Install the curtain rod at the height you desire and attach your new curtains.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cleaning around where the frame used to be is often critical to how the shower will look. Solvents help to remove residues, but be prepared to remove shower grime with other household cleansers.
