Maytag top-loading washers have a fuse in the lid-switch assembly. When you close the lid after adding the laundry and soap, the lid's plastic switch contacts with the assembly underneath. This is a safety switch that does not allow the washer to operate with the lid open. Some Maytag models of washers will not fill with water until the lid is closed, and older models will wash but not spin with the lid open. Checking the fuse with a multimeter determines if it needs replacing.
Step 1
Turn the circuit breaker to the washer off.

Open the lid of the washer. Remove the screws that hold the top panel on the washer by turning each one counterclockwise with a screwdriver. Lift the top straight up and remove it from the washer.
Step 3
Insert a screwdriver in one screw in the lid-switch assembly. The lid switch assembly is a metal box in the area where the lid closes and makes contact for the washer to operate. Turn the screw counterclockwise to loosen it, and pull it straight out. Repeat this action to remove the second screw.
Step 4
Pull the top of the lid-switch assembly straight up and off. The lid switch fuse is revealed in the assembly.
Step 5
Set a multimeter to x1 ohms and turn it on. Place one probe on each end of the fuse to test it. The multimeter should show continuity as the needle moves to the right on the display. If the needle does not move, the fuse is faulty and needs replacing.
