How to Cut Diamond Grade Vinyl

How to Cut Diamond Grade Vinyl thumbnail
Diamond grade vinyl is used by the DOT to make street signs.

Diamond grade vinyl is used on indoor and outdoor signs for anything from road signs to boat name decals. Diamond grade vinyl is very durable, making it difficult to cut. It will not sever with regular blades. A special tungsten carbide blade that is coated in cement must be used to effectively cut through the vinyl. Diamond grade vinyl is usually cheaper than hand painted designs and letters and is much easier to remove. It will last for up to eight years in outdoor conditions.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the cement coated ultra fine grain tungsten carbide blade carefully into the knife handle according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 2

Trace the pattern that you want to cut out of the diamond grade vinyl onto the back of the vinyl sheet.

    • 3

Place the diamond grade vinyl sheet face down on the cutting mat and firmly press the blade onto the outline of the shape or pattern that you will be cutting. Slowly but firmly follow the traced shape or outline with the cement coated tungsten carbide blade.

    • 4

Lift a piece of the cut out with the tip of the blade and gently remove the cut out from the vinyl sheet.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cement coated ultra fine grain tungsten carbide blades last three to five times longer than regular vinyl cutting blades.

  • A cement coated ultra fine grain tungsten carbide blade can also be inserted into sign cutting machine where you can program a design into the machine to cut an intricate design, if needed.

  • Use extreme caution when handling the cement coated ultra fine grain tungsten carbide blade. Use tweezers to insert it if possible to avoid cutting your fingers when you touch it.
