How to Turn On an Odometer in a 1999 GM
All 1999 GM vehicles come equipped with an odometer on the vehicle's instrument cluster to inform the driver of how many miles have been driven. All odometers turn on automatically when the engine is turned on, but the electric odometers that are a part of the digital display have to be selected through the display button. Digital displays can show the odometer, how much fuel is left in the tank, and when the engine oil needs to be changed. Mechanical odometers will show the mileage at all times.

1
Place the keys into the ignition of your GM vehicle and turn the engine on.
-
2
Press the cylindrical button on the instrument cluster above the steering wheel to cycle through the display options on the digital display. Stop when you reach the odometer. If your vehicle has steering wheel controls, there may be a button that says "ODO," which is the odometer button. Press it to show the odometer. If the buttons are not turning the odometer on, the problem may be with the fuse or the odometer's wiring.

3
Remove the cover from the fuse panel below the steering wheel. Locate the fuse numbered "4." This is the instrument cluster fuse. If the fuse is broken or blown out, you will need to replace it with a new 10A fuse. If the fuse is fine, the odometer may not be properly connected.

4
Remove the screws from above the instrument cluster and pull off the dash frame. Remove the four screws retaining the instrument cluster to the GM vehicle and pull out the cluster. Reach behind the cluster to access it's wiring connectors. The middle wiring connector is for the odometer. Make sure it is properly connected and place the instrument cluster back into the GM vehicle. Reinstall all screws. If the odometer is still malfunctioning, the problem may be with the odometer itself and you may need to replace it.
