How to Know Your Company's Vision

The direction that your company takes in the future will depend in large part on its vision for itself down the road. A company writes a formal vision statement that will serve to guide its policy and decision making. A vision is idealistic, and the company's mission statement states how it plans to reach that vision. As an employee, you should know what the vision is by reading the formal vision statement and observing and researching your company in depth. A vision is a reflection of the company's core values. You may not want to be part of a company that has a different vision than you think it should. You might also be able to position yourself for a promotion or added responsibilities because you believe in that vision and try to promote it in your job.

Read your company's literature. This can include product and service descriptions, responses to customer satisfaction surveys, and its website. Your company's website is a good source of information not only about the company's vision for the future, but also its history. The company's history will likely play a role in determining its priorities for the future.

Keep up with your company in the news. Again, this might include its responses to customer satisfaction surveys, and it may also include stories about it in local papers, trade journals and other business and industry-related publications. Look not only in online publications, but also in print publications to learn about your company's reputation in the community. Its responses to news stories about it or the reasons it made the news in the first place can give you a good idea about its current and future priorities.

Talk directly to your company's leadership. If you have a chance to attend a conference or training event where leaders and decision makers in your company will be, do your best to attend the event. Speak to the leaders, asking them directly about where they think the company is headed in the future. Another way to find out straight from the horse's mouth about the company's vision is to discuss the issue with your superior in a candid conversation about the topic. You do not need to reveal any underlying reasons for why you want to know if you are considering leaving the company.

Listen to what is going on around you. Stay in tune with the happenings within the company. Read the monthly emails from the CEO instead of deleting them. Find out how problems with customers are dealt with. Listen for the process of decision making instead of just for its outcome. How a company makes its decisions also reflects the company's vision.
