How to Replace the Timer on a Kenmore Clothes Washer

The timer on your Kenmore washing machine serves an important purpose. The timer not only controls the length of each cycle, but allows you to choose from the many available cycles. The timer is also used to start the wash cycle, which occurs when you pull the timer knob straight out. If the timer breaks or malfunctions, the machine will not operate or will not properly wash your clothes. To restore proper function to your washing machine, replace a broken or malfunctioning timer.     • 1

      Unplug the washer's power cord from the wall outlet.

      Remove the two plastic end caps on the front left and right sides of the control panel. To remove, lift the top of the end cap and pull toward you.

      Remove the screw below each end cap to release the control panel. Rotate the control panel up 180 degrees so the internal components are accessible.

      Locate the two holes on the right side of the rear of the timer unit placed above one another. Locate the hole placed to the immediate left of the two holes.

      Insert needle-nose pliers into the hole and pull out the long black rod inside the hole.

      Lift the knob off the front of the timer, then remove the clear plastic piece below the knob and the dial. Simply depress the center clips.

      Remove the two screws located below the dial on the timer.

      Unclip the wire harness from the side of the timer from the inside of the control panel.

      Slide the timer assembly to the left to unclip, then remove the timer assembly.

      Insert the hooks on the right side of the new timer assembly into the grooves on the inside of the control panel, then slide the timer to the right to lock it into place.

      Connect the wire harness to the side of the timer.

      Connect the mounting screws to the front of the timer from the outside of the control panel.

      Pull the black rod out of the hole on the new timer, if necessary, using the needle-nose pliers.

      Place the dial and plastic piece back onto the timer post, then snap the timer knob back onto the timer post. Insert the black rod from the rear to secure the timer knob.

      Rotate the control panel down and secure it with the two screws that were removed from the bottom left and right sides of the control panel.

      Snap the plastic end-caps back onto the washer.

      Plug the washer back into the wall or turn on the breaker.
