How to Repair My Air Compressor
Air compressors are tools used to help with various home and shop projects. As with any type of machinery, it is possible that you may experience performance issues while using an air compressor. While the type of problems you encounter can vary depending on the model you are using, some problems are similar across different models. The solutions to the problems can also vary depending on the model being utilized. Examining several easy fixes for two popular air compressor brands -- Alltrade and Black & Decker -- provides some simple solutions to common performance problems. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions

Alltrade Air Compressors
-
1
Check the main power cord if the compressor does not start. If the cord is loose or unplugged, securely plug it into an electrical socket.
-
2
Check the "Motor/Pressure" switch. If it is set to the "Off" position, change it to the "Auto" position.
-
-
3
Turn off the compressor if the motor suddenly stops during operation and wait for the motor to cool down. A motor stopping in this manner could be a sign that it has overheated. In the event of overheating, the "Motor Thermal" switch is triggered thereby shutting the motor down. Once the engine has cooled down, press the "Motor Thermal Overload" button until you hear a click to resume operation.
-
4
Move the compressor to a new location if the motor is constantly overheating. Make sure the compressor is in a location where the vents are open and free to move air.

5
Leave the compressor to cool for about 30 minutes if the motor suddenly shuts off while in use. This may be a sign that the motor is overheated and the "Thermal Overload" switch has triggered thereby shutting the motor off to allow for cooling.
-
6
Check the main power cord or extension cord if the "Thermal Overload" switch triggers repeatedly. Unplug the cord from the socket it is currently plugged into and plug it into another socket; the one it is currently connected to may not be providing enough power.
-
7
Set the "Auto/On/Off" switch to "Off" if the safety valve pops off. This is a sign of excessive pressure in the tank.
-
8
Manually pull on the safety valve's ring if air is leaking from the safety valve. If air still leaks after pulling it, the safety valve is defective and needs to be replaced.
