Sunroofs can be installed using a few basic tools.

Sunroofs are sporty features on cars that let air circulate throughout the car without requiring the side windows to be down. A sunroof can become damaged through repetitive use or from inclement weather eventually resulting in the need for replacement. The process of replacing a sunroof is not as complicated as some owners may think and can be completed with basic tools that most homeowners have.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the ceiling cover of the car with the pry bar. Start at the edges by the door frames and insert the edge of the pry bar under the ceiling cover and push up on the end of the bar so that the cover is pushed away from the ceiling. Continue this process until the entire ceiling cover has been removed to expose the sunroof mechanisms. Set the ceiling cover somewhere where it will stay clean.

    • 2

Remove the sunroof support by loosening the nuts using an appropriate sized socket and ratchet wrench. Place the nuts in a bowl so you don't lose them. Set the support aside.

    • 3

Disconnect the current piece of sunroof glass from the clips that secure the glass to the window crank. The glass should be able to be pulled out of the clips since the clips hold the glass in place with pressure.

    • 4

Position the new sunroof in place and press the end into the glass clips. If you find it difficult to press the glass into the pressure clips, use a flat head screwdriver to pry the clip open and slip the edge of the glass into the clip. Slide the screwdriver out of the way and press the glass to the back of the clip. Repeat this process for the other clip.

    • 5

Position the sunroof back in place and place the nuts on the bolts. Tighten the bolts with a ratchet wrench.

    • 6

Position the ceiling cover back into the car and line up the clips on the roof with the tabs on the top of the ceiling cover. Start in one corner of the car and gently tap the tabs into the clips with your fist.
