How to Use a 2005 Ford F-150 Low 4x4 Lariat

Drive forwards, and in sand, shift to a lower gear and drive steadily so the wheels don't spin.

Ford recommends using four-wheel drive on the 2005 Lariat only part-time as drivetrain damage can occur if used excessively on dry pavement. Shifting into four-wheel drive low ratio is ideal on off-road surfaces where extra gearing is needed at low speeds.

Instructions

1. Identify the conditions that are suitable for 4x4 low. 4x4 low is used when maximum power is required by all four wheels at low speeds. It's intended for off-road applications which can include deep sand, steep grades, or pulling. Use 4x4 low when 4x4 high isn't providing enough traction.

2. Move the transfer case lever, or press the button when the F-150 is traveling at speeds lower than three miles per hour. You'll sometimes find it easier to move into 4x4 low when the truck is rolling rather than when it's stopped. Sometimes, the 4x4 low won't engage when the truck is rolling --- if the selector is on the dash rather than a lever. In that case, increase speed to five miles per hour, stop and make the 4x4 low engagement with the clutch depressed, or the automatic shift in "Neutral." Make sure the 4x4 low light on the dash is illuminated so you know the shift has taken place.

3. Drive forward, and in sand, shift to a lower gear and drive steadily so the wheels don't spin. In mud and water, brake well in advance because braking may be limited. On hills, drive straight up or down -- don't drive crosswise or turn on the hill.
