How do I Replace Glass in a '66 Dodge Charger?
When restoring your 1966 Dodge Charger, replacing the glass is an important task. Not only does a busted windshield make your Charger look less than its best, it reduces visibility and can earn you a hefty fine if you take it out on the road. However, installing the windshield incorrectly will make your Dodge Charger dramatically less safe in the event of a collision. Due to the difficulty of this task, it is useful to seek professional help to install your new windshield.
Things You'll Need
- Flat screwdriver
- Razor knife
- Crowbar
- Clean cloths
- Urethane primer
- Urethane adhesive
- New windshield
Instructions

1
Pry away the trim from around the windshield with a flat screwdriver. Insert the blade of the screwdriver under the edges and pry it up, being careful not to break the tabs underneath.
-
2
Cut through the adhesive band that holds the windshield in place. Using a razor knife, cut evenly along the edges.
-
-
3
Slide the edge of a crowbar under one of the bottom corners of the windshield and pry it up. Once it's up, work your way around the edges, prying it loose as you go.
-
4
Remove the loosened windshield from your Charger with the help of an assistant.
-
5
Wash the frame where the windshield fits with a clean, wet cloth. When it's clean, dry it with a clean cloth.
-
6
Lay down a coat of urethane primer in the groove where the windshield sits.
-
7
Set down a band of urethane adhesive around the edges of the frame. Make sure the adhesive goes on over the primer, or else it will not bond to the windshield. The adhesive must be applied evenly all the way around to ensure a tight bond so the windshield will not leak.
-
8
Put the new windshield into the frame with the help of your assistant. It should lay flat and even in the frame, and should be installed right-side up.
-
9
Replace the trim.
