Modifications are needed when installing face plates on tile.

Switch plates are the plastic or metal coverings that fit over light switches. They are attached to a wall with basic screws, and the installation process is simple. However, if the wall has a beveled tile surface, it can get a little tricky. You will quickly realize that the switch plate is farther out from the wall than it used to be and requires some changes in the installation procedure. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Flip off the switch at the main fuse box for the house to turn off the power to the room.

    • 2

Look inside the hole and locate the two screws, at the top and bottom, that hold the switch assembly to the wall. Remove them with a screwdriver.

    • 3

Reach inside the switch box and grasp the actual light switch assembly. Pull it gently out from the wall until it is removed and only the wiring is still inside the metal electrical box.

    • 4

Slide a PVC electrical box extender over the light assembly and push it into the metal box in the wall until it will no longer move. The top of the PVC extender will fit flush against the beveled tile, but will be higher than the light assembly was previously sitting.

    • 5

Push the light assembly back into the hole until it is flush with the PVC extender box.

    • 6

Insert a screw through the top of the light assembly to secure it to the extender box. Repeat the process to install another screw in the bottom of the light assembly. The screws should be provided with the PVC extender box, but if they are not, use screws 1/4 inch longer than the ones previously in the light switch.

    • 7

Place the new switch plate on top of the light switch and insert screws through the holes in the front of the plate. The screws will align with holes in the extender, so simply tighten them with screwdriver.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have a double light switch, use a dual gang box extender.
