Firefighters use pike poles as part of the standard tool kit.

Firefighters employ pike poles and ladders, as part of their job. A pike pole is a long handled tool with a hooked working end. This hook is the "pike". There is a pointed top and a curved hook. The pike pole is used to break glass, retrieve bodies or victims, from smoke-filled rooms, and to haul other tools. When the pike pole is not in the hands of the the rescuers, it needs to be placed on a ladder rung in a safe and effective manner.

Instructions

    • 1

Climb the ladder with the pike pole pushed to the outer edge of the ladder. Keep your hand clasped around the handle, keeping it secure against the ladder. Slide the pole along the outer edge, as you ascend or descend the ladder. Keep the pike point facing-in, toward the building.

Yell "stopping climb" and bring the pike pole to shoulder height. Use the pole to break glass windows, or to retrieve tools.

    • 3

Place the pike hook, facing towards the building, on a rung of the ladder, at shoulder height. Make sure the hook's curve is facing the building, so the handle rests snug against the ladder, based on the curve.

    • 4

Push the pike pole to the edge of the ladder. When ascending, keep the pike pole on the right-hand side of the ladder; when descending, hang the pole on the left-hand side of the ladder.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always carry the pike pole with the pike in front of you, facing the side.
