How to Build an Arcade Cabinet for XBox

Playing classic games on your own arcade machine is a rewarding project.

Building an arcade cabinet for your own home is a challenging but worthwhile task. Using a computer or gaming console such as an Xbox along with a television and gaming controls will allow you to recreate an arcade experience without the extreme cost of an authentic arcade machine. Plan to spend a considerable amount of time gathering and organizing all materials needed, as well as taking the necessary safety precautions when using power tools.

Preparation

1. Design or locate a cabinet plan that fits your needs and location. There are many freely available cabinet plans online. If you do not wish to build an entire cabinet, find an old arcade machine that is no longer being used in your local area. Sometimes these older machines can be customized.

2. Gather plywood and 2x4 wood beams according to the designs you have chosen. Purchase other construction hardware if needed for any specific requirements of your plan.

3. Set up the gaming console or computer setup that will provide the gaming functions of the arcade cabinet. For simplicity, purchase an x-arcade controller and the required adapter for your gaming device. The x-arcade controller will save you from having to build and wire an entire controller system, a daunting project by itself.

Construction

1. Measure and cut your wood supplies according to your arcade cabinet design using the power jigsaw. Wear protective gear and always enlist the help of a partner if possible when using dangerous power tools.

2. Drill the holes required in your design. Use the power screwdriver with the fasteners and screws specified in your design to provide stability to your arcade cabinet.

3. Paint the fully constructed cabinet to your liking. This step is best done before installing any electronic components inside of the cabinet.

4. Install the television monitor and computer or gaming console inside of the cabinet. Ensure that all electronic equipment is properly wired and safely grounded.

5. Mount the x-arcade controller according to your designs and attach the controller to the gaming console. If you are using an Xbox console, you will need the x-arcade adapter for Xbox.

Tips & Warnings

• Plan to spend most of your time planning the best cabinet design. Finding an existing plan that uses the x-arcade controller along with standard television monitors and gaming consoles should be relatively easy.

• Always be mindful of safety precautions and eye protection when using high powered cutting devices.
