Vacuum tubes are the key to warm sound.

The 300B is a classic amplifier vacuum tube. Unlike most audio tubes, it remains in production. Companies also are continuing to produce amplifiers that take the 300B. In the 1980s, home audio equipment featured the 300B. It offers low noise and is reliable. Installing 300B amplifier yourself is a simple way to develop a hands-on relationship with your amplifier.

      Buy a tube that will meet your needs. Use the Internet to research the kinds of tubes that offer your desired sound, you can use the 300B you have.

      Turn off the amplifier.

      Remove the amplifier cover, if there is one, by unscrewing the screws and lifting it off carefully.

      Pick up the tube with the cloth. This is especially important with a vintage tube because the printing can easily damaged.

      Place the tube carefully in the empty socket. Line up the the tab on the base with the slot in the socket by gently rotating the tube in the socket. Do not force it. The tubes are glass and break easily. When the tab catches, gently press the tube into its socket. Rock the tube very slightly back and forth to settle it in.

      Repeat the steps with the second tube if the amp is stereo, or if you have a stereo pair of mono amps.

      Replace the cover, if there is one, and screw it back on. However, you may decide to leave the amp uncovered to display the beautiful tubes. Usually the wiring circuit is totally enclosed in the chassis, so there is no electric danger.

      Connect speakers to the amp before you turning the amp on.

Tips & Warnings

  • Buy a variety of 300B tubes to vary the tone of your amplifier. This is a very easy way to customize your amp. Keep your tubes currently in use on a display shelf.

  • Tubes are made of glass. Be careful not to break them.

  • Don't add or remove tubes to your amp if you have wet hands.
