How to Find Union Contractors

If you're in the market to have remodeling done on your home or place of business, hiring a union contractor is one option. Union contractors are part of a national labor organization -- electricians are part of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, plumbers are part of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union. There are unions for most trades and many professions. Union members must be trained and adhere union guidelines during all jobs. You can find information about union contractors online or at their local headquarters. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the union's local headquarters. If you live in a big city, odds are there is a local -- a branch that represents members in the area -- for various contractors. Local Union 597 of Chicago Pipe Fitters, for example, represents 6,000 piping professionals, according to its website. The local's headquarters can provide you with a list of union contractors in your area.

    • 2

Visit the Unions.org website (see Resources). Type the name of the union or your local city name or zip code into the boxes at the top of the screen and click "Search." Browse the list of results until you find the name of a union that does the type of work you need, and click it to find contractors. You can also select a category from the "Union Vendors" list on the left side of the page. For example, if you're looking for construction work related union contractors, click "Construction."

    • 3

Use the Association for Union Contractor's website (TAUC). The TAUC website allows you to specifically search for a contractor based on the state, the company name or the type of work that contractor does. Specify as much information as you can (at the very least the state to narrow the search results to union contractors in your area) and click "Search."
