How to Troubleshoot a Charmglow Electric Fireplace

James Clark

Charmglow electric fireplaces are available in portable models that can be moved from room to room or as an insert for an existing fireplace. The units are equipped with a heater to radiate warmth into a room as well as sockets for three candelabra-type electric bulbs rated at 40 watts.

You can enjoy a simulated flickering fire with or without the heater feature. If something goes wrong with the Charmglow, troubleshooting the appliance may help you get it working again.

Warning

Shut off the Charmglow and wait at least half an hour for the appliance to cool before attempting to replace light bulbs.

  1. Push the power plug for the Charmglow into a three-prong grounded outlet. Flip the "Power" and "Heater" switches on the side of the appliance.

  2. Dial the thermostat control to the "HI" position. If the heater blower does not turn on, flip off both switches, unplug the power cord and wait five minutes. Plug in the cord and try again. If the heater still does not come on, or the blower motor does not work, unplug the Charmglow and arrange for repairs.

  3. Open the front glass door on the fireplace to unscrew the down light, which is inside the front of the Charmglow at the top. This light directs illumination toward the faux logs. Replace with a working bulb if the light is burned out and close the glass door.

  4. Turn the charmglow around to unscrew the back panel with a screwdriver.

  5. Lift out the log assembly to access the three candelabra light bulbs underneath if there is no flickering flame effect. Unscrew the bulbs counterclockwise and replace with new bulbs, if necessary.

  6. Reattach the back panel and plug in the power cord.
