How to Lay Carbon Fiber
When carbon fiber first hit the market it was highly expensive. This is because of the technology involved in its production. Now consumers can buy the products from a variety of sources, to make it themselves. It is a pretty simple process that only gets easier over time. Carbon fiber is stronger than steel, as well as lighter than steel. It can also be modified using standard woodworking tools. Just keep in mind, there are toxic chemicals involved, and proper precautions need to be taken.
Things You'll Need
- 2 pairs of latex gloves
- Face mask
- Plexiglas
- Mold release wax
- 6 sheets of carbon fiber fabric
- Carbon fiber epoxy
- 2 paintbrushes
- Heat gun
- Heavy duty scissors
- Chisel
Instructions

1
Cover one side of the plexiglass with the mold release wax. Use one of your brushes to apply it. Apply a thick coat, and let is set for about 30-minutes.
-
2
Use your heat gun during this time to help the brush strokes disappear. This is the most crucial step in laying carbon fiber. It will determine how consistent your final product is.

3
Lay your first sheet of fabric on top of the wax. It is important not to disrupt the fabric. It should lay smooth, with no waves or creases in it.
-
4
Use your second brush to gently dab epoxy over the entire sheet. Again, do not disrupt the fabric. There should be no waves, creases, or spreads in the fabric. Dab the epoxy on carefully, and evenly. All you need is a thin layer, about 1/32 of an inch.

5
Lay the second sheet over the first. Now you can be a little less careful when applying the epoxy. Just be sure it is applied evenly. Repeat this step until you have laid all six sheets. You do not need epoxy on the last sheet. Let it dry for 24-hours

User your metal scissors to cut any excess or frayed edges off the carbon fiber. Lift the carbon fiber off of the Plexiglas, using your chisel. It should snap off.
