Macrame is a method of tying rope into knots to create decorative patterns.

Mastering the art of macrame is not difficult. It is a matter of tying knots in strong rope or twine in a decorative and repeating pattern. Much less complicated than crochet and knitting, macrame requires no special hooks or needles. The knot-making is straightforward, and the knots are made by tying the rope with your fingers. A finished handmade macrame planter can be hung from a hook on a ceiling indoors, a porch or patio overhang or a pergola. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Cut eight 36-inch lengths of twine with the scissors. Gather all the twine lengths in your hand with the twine ends matched.

    • 2

Fold over all pieces of twine 4 inches from one end of the gathered twine. Form a circle with the folded twine pieces. Insert the gathered end, and pull tightly to create a knot.

    • 3

Separate two pieces of twine, and tie and them in a knot 3 inches from the bottom knot. Repeat with two more pieces of twine. Repeat twice more until knots have connected four pairs of twine lengths.

    • 4

Knot one twine length from one knotted pair with a twine length from an adjacent knotted twine pair 3 inches from the previous knot. Repeat three times.

    • 5

Continue knotting the twine lengths every 3 inches, creating a diamond-shaped pattern between the knots.

    • 6

Insert the potted plant and saucer into the flexible tube created by the diamond macrame pattern, centering the bottom knot of the plant holder at the bottom of the saucer.

    • 7

Gather all free twine lengths in your hand, fold over the twine lengths in a circle 4 inches from the opposite end, then insert the end of the lengths and pull tight to make a knot. Hang the knot over a hook from a ceiling or porch overhang.
