How to Replace Metal Shingle Roofs

How to Replace Metal Shingle Roofs thumbnail
Metal shingle roofs are found in both commercial and residential areas.

Metal shingles are common in both commercial and residential applications. They combine the more classic looks of slate, tile or wood with the strength and protection of metal. These shingles are very durable and have a four-way locking system that stays watertight on the roof. Replacing metal shingle roofs is no different than replacing asphalt shingle roofs. Instructions

    • 1

Remove the existing shingles from the roof with a shingle removal tool. Slide the tool under the shingles and carefully pry up to remove them. Continue around the entire roof until all of the existing roofing has been removed. Inspect the roof to make sure the underlayment is still in good shape. Verify that there are no scratches or cuts in the felt underlayment.

    • 2

Install gable flashing with clips 24 inches on center vertically, covering the entire roof. The shingles clip into the flashing. Insert roofing nails in the gable flashing every 12 inches to secure it in place.

    • 3

Line up the first shingle at the bottom left hand corner of the roof and cut a 2-inch notch in the bottom locking lip with a utility knife for water to drain easily. Lock it into the flashing and fasten it to the roof with clips. Slide the second shingle in place next to the first and lock it in the same manner. Install all the following shingles until the first row is complete. Cut the last shingle with tin snips to fit.

    • 4

Cut the first shingle of the second row at the spot on the shingle with the No. 2 on it. Set the first piece of the second row above the first row and lock it into place. Install the second row just like the first with full shingles the rest of the way. Cut the first piece of the third row at the No. 3 on the shingle and install it just like the second row. Cut the first piece of the fourth course at No. 4 and install the rest of the row with full shingles.

    • 5

Install the fifth row with full pieces and continue up the roof following the same pattern described in the previous step until you reach the top. Set the ridge caps in place over the top of the roof and fasten it down with the clips spaced out every 12 inches. Continue down the roof until all the ridge caps have been installed.
