How to Install a Fence on My Property Line
Installing a fence in a yard is often done to create a safe play area for children or a restrictive area for pets and to keep unwanted visitors out. It is often desirable to obtain as much area as possible inside the fence line. Property lines can come into play at this point as fences push the boundaries of a yard. Installing a fence on or along a property line should be done so that no part of the fence encroaches onto others' property and so it meets any requirements from local government. Arrange for a surveyor to come to the property and determine the exact location of the property line along which the fence will be installed.

Contact an underground utility locating service and have them mark underground lines in the yard, especially along or near the area where the fence will be installed.

Obtain a copy of local regulations, guidelines and ordinances from a homeowners association or local municipality. Determine the guidelines for fence placement along a property line, as it will typically be at least 6 to 8 inches away from the line. Also purchase any permits needed for construction.

Select fencing materials that will blend with homes in the neighborhood, coordinate with other installed fencing, allow airflow from property to property and not restrict the view of a neighbor. Attempt to be a good neighbor and consider others when selecting a fence.

Talk over your plans with neighbors along whose property the fence will be constructed. Provide them with pictures of the fencing materials as well as copies of local regulations and ordinances if necessary. Attempt to resolve any issues prior to constructing the fence.

Keep all materials off of adjoining property during the construction. Avoid crossing into neighbors' yards or property unless you have arranged for permission to do so ahead of time.

Discuss all specifics of the fence installation with a supervisor or crew leader if the fence construction is being contracted. Provide clear instructions as to the location of the fence in respect to the property line and encourage the workers to keep noise to a minimum.
