Instructions for Wood Carving With Moto Tools

Instructions for Wood Carving With Moto Tools thumbnail
Moto tools allow wood carvers to take advantage of precision high speed cutters.

Wood carving is a traditional folk art. Carvers can incorporate new technology such as motorized rotary tools into traditional carving techniques to create contemporary works of art. These tools still require a great deal of skill and precision when carving. The benefit to these tools is that they can allow you to achieve different effects without expensive tools. Once you have the rotary tool, you can purchase inexpensive bits or attachments instead of having to purchase expensive chisels or carving knives.

Things You'll Need

  • 3-by-3-by-6-inch walnut block
  • Band saw
  • Motorized rotary or "moto" tool
  • Carving bits (large, medium and fine)
  • Sanding attachment
  • Wood finish
  • Paintbrush

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a front and side profile of a bird onto the 3-by-3-by-6-inch walnut block with a pencil.

    • 2

Cut out the front profile of the bird using a band saw along the pencil lines. Cut the side profile using the same procedure.

    • 3

Place a large carving bit into the rotary tool. Carve out the overall curves and outline of the shape. Do all of the rough carving with this attachment. Allow the bit to do all of the cutting. Rest the bit onto the wood without forcing it down into the wood.

    • 4

Refine the carving with the medium-sized carving bits. Begin to add details such as the curve of the wings and tail and eye indentations.

    • 5

Refine the carving using a small carving bit. Add the fine details and texture to the bird carving. Carve feathers, beak, legs and eyes with the small bit.

    • 6

Sand the carving lightly with a sanding attachment for the rotary tool. Avoid sanding detailed areas. Sand with the grain.

    • 7

Apply a wood finish of your choice using a paintbrush. Allow the finish to dry before handling.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try out carving with the different carving bits on a scrap piece of wood prior to beginning your carving.

  • Wear eye protection when operating woodworking tools.
