How to Start an Assisted Living Center

Assisted living centers provide many housing amenities for elderly or disabled residents.

As the population ages, assisted living centers will be in greater demand. Unlike nursing homes, which provide care to persons unable to take care of daily needs, assisted living centers offer amenities that enable residents to enjoy as much independent living as possible. Most residents do not require the assistance of medical professionals on a regular basis. However, many assisted living centers are located close to hospitals and nursing homes, enabling smooth transition if needed.

1. Develop a business plan. An assisted living center is a business, and having a plan will make it far easier to obtain financing if you don't plan to use your own resources. Included in the plan should be the funds required to buy or lease a building, to hire staff, and for a vehicle to transport your residents.

2. Study your competition. Find out the rates nearby facilities charge by calling them on the phone. You might offer lower rates at first as an incentive for new residents, but don't price yourself so low you won't make a profit. Consider providing residents in your facility with services or amenities not offered elsewhere so you can stand out from the other locations.

3. Find a good location for your center. Understand that your facility will attract more residents if it located in an area close to worship venues, medical centers, and shopping. Keep in the mind the income levels of your residents so you can find locations near affordable retail outlets.

4. Obtain the required licenses. Contact the Department of Business in your state to find specific fees and requirements. Be prepared for background checks and inspections.
