How to Replace a Weatherstrip
Weather-stripping is an important part of the door; it keep bugs, vermin, drafts, water out of a home and saves on heating and cooling costs. Install weather-strip around all of the movable parts of a door for the best protection and insulation. Weather-strip deteriorates due to changes in temperatures, contact with salt and constant rubbing against a surface from opening and closing the door. Weather-strip comes in many variations including rubber, foam, vinyl and polyethylene. Choose the weather-stripping based on the type of door and weather conditions in your area. Remove the door from its hinges. Place a screwdriver up against the bottom of the pin that holds the hinge to the door, lightly tap the screwdriver with a hammer to push the pin upward and remove. Repeat with the other hinge pins. Have a helper hold the door so it does not fall.

Lay the door on an even surface.

Look at the weather-stripping to determine if it slides in or if it pushes into place. Purchase the same type and size as a replacement.

Pull the weather-stripping out of the grooves with needle nosed pliers.

Use a stiff brush to clean dirt, dust and debris out of the grooves.

Slide or press the new weather-stripping in place and cut away excess with a sharp utility knife. Repeat around the door.

Place the door back on the hinges and put the hinge pins back in place.

Tips & Warnings
Bring a piece of weather-stripping to the store to match the size and type as closely as possible. Replace weather-stripping every year for maximum benefit.
