How to Handle a Bulb Planter
One of the drawbacks of planting flowers that grow from bulbs is that the process is labor intensive. Instead of simply sprinkling seeds in the soil and covering them, you must dig a separate hole for each plant bulb. For the gardener who wants to have an entire bed of flowers, this can seem a daunting task. A special gardening tool called a bulb planter makes the task faster and less tedious. Decide whether you want to use a traditional bulb planter or a long-handled bulb planter. The devices work in the same basic way, but long-handled bulb planters may be used while standing and traditional bulb planters are used when kneeling on the ground.

Go to the location where you want to plant the bulb and scrape away any mulch or other ground covering until you expose the top of the soil.

Place the bottom of the bulb planter against the surface of the ground and push it in until the bottom of the handle is level with the surface of the soil. Long-handled bulb planters have a metal bar that you can push down with your foot to insert it.

Hold the handle on top of the bulb planter and twist it to the left and right several times. Lift the device out of the ground along with the soil from the hole. In some long-handled bulb planters, you pull two handles apart to remove the soil instead of twisting.

Place the plant bulb into the newly dug hole with the pointed tip of the bulb facing upward.

Hold the bulb planter over the hole and shake it gently to deposit the soil back into the hole.

Step on top of the planting site with your foot to lightly pack the soil down around the bulb.
